NFL Notebook: Cards sign Heap, send Hightower to 'Skins

FLAGSTAFF - Tight end Todd Heap is coming home.

The former Arizona State and Mesa Mountain View High School player agreed Sunday to terms on a two-year deal with the Cardinals, giving the club a pass-catching threat at tight end for the first time in a decade.

Heap played 10 seasons with the Ravens, who released him before the start of camp in a cost-cutting move. The two-time Pro Bowler, beset by injuries in his career, is healthy now and worked in the off-season with Arizona receiver Larry Fitzgerald.

Heap, 31, had 40 catches for 599 yards and five touchdowns in 16 games last year.

Meanwhile, the Washington Redskins have acquired running back Tim Hightower from the Cardinals for defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday and an undisclosed draft pick.

Hightower, 25, ran for 1,733 yards and 23 TDs over three years. He had 736 yards and five TDs last season, and he also lost four fumbles.

Holliday, 35, played in 15 games for the Redskins last year, starting two and recording 2 1/2 sacks.

The Cardinals also re-signed free agent guard Deuce Lutui after he failed a physical with the Bengals.

Jets sign Burress

NEW YORK - Stuck in prison and his NFL career derailed, Plaxico Burress insisted he'd be back one day. The New York Jets are giving him that second chance.

"I'm just grateful," Burress said. "I'm going to give them everything I've got because they put their trust in me."

The ex-Super Bowl star with the Giants signed a one-year deal with the Jets on Sunday after being released from prison after serving 20 months on a gun charge.

Ravens get Rincon grad

Baltimore signed former Rincon/University High and UTEP offensive tackle Alex Solot to replace Eric Vanden Heuvel, who left the Ravens after a heat incident.

The 6-feet-8-inch, 320-pound Solot, an undrafted rookie, can run the 40-meter dash in 5.2 seconds.

Other Sunday signings

• Houston second-round linebacker Brooks Reed, a former UA Wildcat, signed with the Texans on Sunday.

• All-Pro fullback Vonta Leach inked a three-year, $11 million deal with Baltimore to block for Ray Rice. Houston tried to re-sign the lead blocker for Arian Foster, the NFL's top rusher in 2010.

• Former Ravens running back Willis McGahee signed with Denver and figures to complement incumbent starter Knowshon Moreno with his powerful style.
