Elections staff grilled on Webb

An appeals court in Ohio may have prevented the Lucas County Board of Elections to hold a hearing on whether to decertify the nomination Toledo adviser Lindsay Webb, but this did not prevent the board's Republican members of the election officials grilled on the issue.

At a tense meeting Wednesday, the board of two of four Republicans, Tony and Jon Stainbrook DeGidio, asked the election workers to explain why they did not notify the board or its Director Mrs. Webb had missed a date deadline to accept his candidacy. Because they have not informed the council he nominated Ms. Webb certified ballots were printed.

The three workers - one of whom had his lawyer present - said they relied on the instructions of a returning officer old board, which were that the council did not contest the appointment late acceptances.

Democrats of the committee, Ron and Rita Clark Rothenbuhler, criticized the Republican challenge.

"I feel like there is a seat here," said Rothenbuhler. "[The staff] feel they are harassed."

Therefore, it is difficult for them to do their jobs, he said.

Two Democratic staff - Paula Lykowski and Dan DeAngelis - with a staff member of the GOP, Marie Mikesell, were asked about how they handled the end of the letter received from Councillor Webb. Ms. Mikesell, the daughter of the city of Toledo GOP Consultant Rob Ludeman, refused to answer questions from members of the GOP board based on the advice of his lawyer, who was present at the meeting.

Republicans defended their cause, saying they had to investigate in a public forum to ensure transparency of operations of the board election.

"It's hard for us to get to the bottom of this moment one of the employees who handled paperwork, Ms. Webb has a lawyer and refused to answer our questions," Mr. Stainbrook said after the meeting. "It is our duty to examine these issues."

Ultimately, the board agreed that the policy of the Elections Office is required to be clearer.

"I have seen nothing that suggests that incompetence," Mr. DeGidio said. "There was no policy in place."

At one point during the meeting, Ms. Webb's lawyer, Keith Wilkowski, objected to the proceedings, calling it "a Star Chamber inquisition."

Originally, a hearing on whether the nomination of Ms. Webb decertify was planned, but a court ordered the Ohio Board of Elections calls Wednesday morning to cancel. The court ruling calls for the electoral commission to respond to Ms. Webb's argument that the protest filed by Republican Douglas DeCamp, one of his opponents in the primary Sept. 13, was submitted after the deadline for protests.
