The signs and symptoms of different feline diseases

Herpes Virus is the most common virus that affects our kittens. This is distinguished by runny inflamed eyes, runny noses, running a temperature, etc. It is the most common kitty virus. Quite often you hear people refer to a kitty that has a “kitty cold” and this is most likely the virus they are talking about.

Calicivirus (FVC) is distinguished by mouth ulcers which is common signs of upper respiratory illness (fever, dehydration, sneezing, nasal discharge, etc.). The prognosis is usually good but requires a visit to your veterinarian to get the proper medication to treat this illness. It’s kind of equivalent to we humans getting the flu or a very bad cold. Forty-five percent of upper respiratory illnesses are caused from this virus. It is contagious to other cats/kittens. Another symptom of this virus is limping.

If your kitten seemed fine the day before (running, playing, etc.) and the next day it is limping (usually on one of the front feet) it could have this virus. Check its temperature and if it has a temperature (over 102 degrees) and is limping it may have this virus. Take your kitty to your veterinarian immediately – it needs to get started on some antibiotics.

Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is responsible for more cat diseases than any other infectious agent and (with the exception of trauma) is the leading cause of death in household cats. It is transmitted by saliva (i.e., cat bites, drinking from the same water bowl, food dishes, grooming, etc.). Kittens can get the disease from their moms. The signs closely resemble other viruses (fever, loss of appetite, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea). There are two tests that can be run to tell if the cat/kitten has FeLV – IFA test and ELISA test. This is a nasty disease and one that a cat/kitten cannot recover from and can infect other cats.

There is no cure so please do not introduce other cats/kittens to one that MAY have this disease – it needs to be tested first. Please never let a new kitten around another kitten until they are both tested.

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is related to the AIDS virus but cannot be given to humans from their cats. No one knows for sure what causes this diseases but it is believed to be from cat bites (probably during mating season). Close or casual contact doesn’t appear to be a mode of transmission. Signs of sickness are unexplained illnesses (unexplained and long-standing diarrhea, severe gum disease, emaciation, fever, recurrent upper respiratory infections, etc.). Most veterinarians use a combo test that will test for both feline leukemia and FIV. It isn’t expensive to do the test and it is so important to have it done.
