Legends Museum at Cincinnati Gardens , 2250 Seymour Ave., Bond Hill. Everybody knows about the Gardens, but how many know about the museum, which is open to the public, free of charge, before and after events? Among our favorite pieces are the circus program (April 1963). The owners had booked a circus, not thinking the Cincinnati Royals were going to upset the Syracuse Nationals earlier in the playoffs. But the Royals did - and had to play Game 4 against the Boston Celtics away from home.

St. Aloysius Orphanage , 4721 Reading Road, Bond Hill. Cincinnati native Nancy Vonderheide, who was the world champion archer in 1961, practiced occasionally on the grounds.

Hamilton Tailoring , 490 E McMillan St., Walnut Hills. It's where the green jackets that go to Masters champions have been made since the mid-1960s.

Wallace "Bud" Smith's death , 400 Erkenbrecher, Avondale. That's where the former lightweight world champion saw a man beating up a woman and stepped in. The man pulled a gun and shot Smith in the head, killing him.

Former Schmidlapp Hall , now Dieterle Vocal Arts Center, 280 CCM Blvd., University of Cincinnati. The prominent structure on the south end of Nippert Stadium was the home of UC basketball in the first half of the 20th century and site of the classic "one who got away" story. The Brooklyn Dodgers gave Sandy Koufax, who was at UC on a basketball scholarship, his pitching tryout there.

Armory Fieldhouse , 121 W. Daniels St. Armory Fieldhouse, site of UC's 1961-62 national championship basketball teams and Oscar "The Big O" Robertson, who just preceded them.

Maurice Stokes' final home , Clifton Wing F&G, Good Samaritan Hospital, 375 Dixmyth Ave., Clifton. This is where stroke victim and former Cincinnati Royals star Maurice Stokes lived, receiving daily visits from teammate Jack Twyman, who also held several basketball-game fundraisers for him and became his legal guardian. Stokes hit his head on the arena floor in Minneapolis in the last game of the 1957-58 regular season. Three days later, on the flight home from Detroit after the first game of the playoffs, he suffered a seizure, fell into a coma and was left permanently paralyzed. He died of a heart attack in Cincinnati on April 6, 1970, at age 36. The story of Stokes and his relationship with Twyman was made into the movie "Maurie" in 1973.
