Guess who's coming to dinner?

Interest in cooking shows has been boiling over in recent times. You need only to go over the audience ratings for BBC Lifestyle (DStv channel 180) and Food Network (DStv channel 185) for evidence of this.

And it is this very fascination with gastronomic delights that has seen the popularity of, among others, Gordon Ramsay, Nigella Lawson, Jamie Oliver, James Martin, Heston Blumenthal, Rick Stein, Bobby Flay and our Justin Bonello, soar over the years.

Of course, in this cut-throat TV industry, innovativeness is key. While tried-and-tested formats continue to be milked, novel concepts are also coming to the fore. Come Dine With Me, Dining in the Dark and Dinner Date have certainly shifted the paradigms in the genre.

And the former UK show has proved to be such a hit that other countries have, after it launched on January 10, 2005, bought the rights to screen their own version. For the first time, the African continent is jumping on the bandwagon – Rapid Blue are producing Come Dine With Me SA.

Kee-Leen Irvine, executive producer and managing director of Rapid Blue, says: “The response has been phenomenal. People have come out with wonderful ideas for parties and are very enthusiastic to be a part of the show. I’m busy finalising my tape selection before physical auditions get under way.”

While whipping up a mouth-watering feast is the foundation of the show, the real magnetism lies in the drama generated by the personalities as they snoop through the personal belongings of their host and snigger at said person’s cooking skills (or clear lack thereof).

Irvine concedes: “Yes, we looked for people who cannot only cook, but also have interesting personalities, and be a great host. Basically, people who can keep a dinner party going.”

Although South Africa has 11 official languages, it isn’t wholly reflective of the slew of cultures to be found. And that is one of the key ingredients to spice up interest in the local version.

“I’m hoping for the show to be completely indicative of our population. We have such rich diversity. While some contestants will offer culturally-specific food, I think there will be a fair amount of variety. The show will defy stereotypes,” she adds.

Lost in Lagos Spice TV Presents Spice Haute Party
