Crandall Reservoir boosts Hillsboro water security

Residents on Evergreen Road, at the northwest end of Hillsboro, have had their share of open house meetings with the city over the years. But none has been as well-attended and relaxed as the “Tailgate Barbecue Open House” held by the city water department Wednesday, June 29, to present the nearly final plans for construction of the Will Crandall Reservoir.

“In the past, for the ‘informational’ open houses,” said Tacy Steele, Water Programs coordinator for the city of Hillsboro, “it’s been difficult to get people interested in coming. Sometimes only five or 10 people might show up.”

To everyone’s surprise and delight, the barbecue was a hit, with close to 50 neighborhood people gathering at the reservoir site on the northeast corner of Evergreen and Glencoe. Families and city workers sat at picnic benches eating grilled burgers and mingling under the tents, reviewing the reservoir plans, asking questions and generally enjoying the dry, early summer evening.

“People I spoke with said they liked the idea (of the barbecue). It’s less intimidating and a better setting than a closed room,” said Steele, who initiated the idea. Steele will be putting up information on the water district’s website in the next few weeks as the plans for the Crandall Reservoir are completed and preliminary construction work begins.

The reservoir will be the third in Hillsboro and similar in style to the one at Brookwood Parkway and Evergreen Road. It’s part of the larger plan for a safe, sustainable water supply for the city, with construction scheduled to begin in March 2012 and completion targeted in the spring of 2014.

“The design is nearly complete,” said Ronald Ward, president of Ward-Henshaw Construction Co., contracted to build the reservoir. “We (Ward-Henshaw) did the reservoir up on Brookwood and Evergreen and this one is similar. But there are a few changes.”

One of the changes, which Tyler Wubbena, engineering manager for the city of Hillsboro’s water department, described as “still being evaluated,” is the addition of solar panels to the top of the reservoir. The cost of installation and maintenance (of solar panels) weighed against potential gains is still being studied, but it is hoped that significant efficiency improvements in the solar industry by local companies such as SolarWorld will make the difference.
