Chesterfield teen with leukemia gets chance to be soldier for a day

FORT LEE - Daniel Phelps may have to wait a few more years before he gets the chance to enlist, but on Friday he got the chance to experience some of a soldier's life.

Daniel, 14, was diagnosed in February 2010 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia - ALL. Currently in remission but still taking medication, the rising seventh-grade student at Falling Creek Middle School and his dream to become a soldier became a topic of conversation at home about a month ago.

"We had a small electrical fire and went to the yellow pages and called an electrician, Michael and Sons," said Daniel's grandmother, Mary Phelps. Phelps said that she is retired from the civil service and worked for a number of years at Fort Monroe. While talking with the electrician, Brian - a former soldier - it came up that Daniel has longed to become a soldier.

"I've always wanted to fight for my country," said Daniel, saying that his desire to be a soldier since he was about 6 years old. Daniel and his family live in Chesterfield County.

But getting the boy, who fought his own battle with leukemia, to the post and participating as a soldier was no easy feat.

"Brian talked to his boss, Joe, and they ended up talking with Cox Radio," said Phelps.

Daniel's mother, Shirley Phelps-Trejo, said that it was the next day when she received a phone call from representatives at Cox Radio. "They said that they wanted to give Daniel the opportunity to be a soldier, be in the Army for a day," Phelps-Trejo said.

On Friday, that opportunity came to life after about a month of talks between Cox Radio, the United Services Organization and representatives from Fort Lee.

When he arrived on post Friday, Daniel and his brother, Sean, 11, were each given Army physical training uniforms of a T-shirt and shorts. Daniel also received a challenge coin and several other mementos to commemorate his day as a soldier including a hat embroidered with the Army motto - "Army Strong."

Daniel's cousin Jennifer "Jenna" Sola, 11, also had the opportunity to enjoy the tour of the post.

"It's cool," Daniel said sitting in the back of an M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle on the Ordnance Campus at Fort Lee. He also said that one of the parts of the day he'll probably remember the longest is getting to see the tanks at the ordnance school's track recovery center where he had the chance to sit inside some of the Army's most powerful fighting vehicles including an M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank.

Though you can go to school to discover the best way to be an electrician, most people will instead become an apprentice to learn the career. Not only will you be getting on-the-job coaching, but you may also be doing thorough study from the classroom.

To find the chance to be an apprentice you can contact your area union for electricians. They should be in the position to point you into the correct direction for any program which you might qualify for. Once you have concluded the apprenticeship you’ll be trained to function in the building industry or do servicing.

For you to sign up for an apprenticeship you should be at least 18 years old. Most also demand that you have either your GED or a diploma from school. You will need to possess capabilities in English and math to be considered for this opportunity.

Some may give you a test which will need to be passed in an effort to join this program. A number of the programs that can be out there might last as long as 4 years. Upon successful completion of these programs, you will not only have hours while at work, but you will have concluded a minimum of 144 hours within the educational setting.

Important classes will include installing and looking after electrical systems and electrical theory. Many apprentices will likely take other courses that teach electrical code laws for his or her state as well as related safety practices.

While doing the job, a student will undoubtedly be advised by a seasoned electrician doing quick jobs, such as drilling holes, or attaching conduit. As they become more knowledgeable, the tasks they generally do will become more complex.

One other way to develop into an electrician is to go to a technical college and get these classes completed that way. After you’ve obtained most of the classes you’ll be able to look for an apprenticeship program that you can be a part of. Some colleges offer the assistance of locating a job once you’ve managed to graduate as well.

When trying to decide the way you choose to become an electrician it is important to compare both possibilities. Call institutions to see just how much they cost, and if they may have any programs that will help cover the tuition. Consider the location of the college into account in the process.

Whether you choose to attend a technical college or join an apprenticeship, the two of these options are going to have you on the way to learning necessary skills.
