Williamson County Briefs: Sinkhole discovered on Summit High field

As crews scurry to finish work on Spring Hill’s $40 million Summit High School, workers have found a large sinkhole on one of its athletic fields.

Geotechnical engineers are searching for the cause of a 60-foot-long, 18-foot-wide and 14-foot-deep hole discovered earlier this week, said Director of Construction and Facilities Kevin Fortney. Repairing the hole could cost $85,000.

County forum goes live online

Williamson County is now one of only a few municipalities across the state to have taken advantage of a state law that allows for online discussions of public business between elected officials. Williamson County’s forum is only the fourth in Tennessee. The public can take a look at the forum at http://www.williamsoncounty-tn.gov . Scroll over the “government” heading and then select “county commission” in the drop-down menu. Another menu carries the link to the forum.

Approval of tax hike to bring in $800K for school district

The Williamson County Commission’s recent approval of a 23-cent increase to the property tax rate has created $800,000 in additional funds for the Franklin Special School District.

The small district of about 3,800 students and seven schools will propose additional teacher hires and an increase in substitute teacher pay with the new funds, FSSD Director of Finance John McAdams said.

The FSSD school board will likely approve its 2011-12 general-purpose budget, which will now include the additional funds, at its regularly scheduled meeting 6:30 p.m. Monday at Moore Elementary School.
