Wilbanks remembers husband as more than hero

“It is a great honor, especially coming from an area that doesn’t normally name their schools after an individual,” said Wilbanks by phone from her McAdams, Miss., home. “It is going to be a very exciting day full of surprises. I am very impressed with how hard everyone worked to make this happen and I am very excited about it.” “When our children began to come, he began to put those things aside,” Wilbanks recalled. “When I got out of the hospital with our firstborn, he took a week off to stay with us and take care of us. He was very faithful and very considerate. Our second child was born in Nevada and he took two weeks off to stay home with the oldest child. Then when I got home from the hospital, he took care of the three of us. He could do anything I could do including changing messy diapers.” “We got our assignment to go to Alaska and I wanted a sewing machine,” said Wilbanks. “At that time there was a sewing machine called a Featherweight Portable and it would fit in a woman’s purse. He bought it for me and brought it home and he kept saying, ‘There is no way that is going to sew.’ The next thing I knew, he was sitting at the sewing machine trying it out.” “The last weekend we were together, I remember he had become a close friend of the preacher at my hometown community church, Glen Allan Methodist Church in Glen Allan, Mississippi,” said Wilbanks. “He went to church ahead of me that day and when we got to the church, he stepped up to the car and he told me we were moving our church membership to that church today. He took care of every detail. He did it casually and did not make any fuss about it.” Asked about what he might think of the school being named in his honor, Wilbanks said, “He would be so pleased and yet he would be humble, too. He was that kind of person. If time had stood still that day and he had time to think, he still would have done the same thing. There is no way he could have turned his back on all those troops that were about to be ambushed without doing everything he possibly could.” “It was tough but I had the backup of my parents,” she said. “I stayed in their home after he was killed mainly because there were four children, the oldest only 5. I felt like I had to have some backup. My parents were exceptional people and they were very supportive.
