Host Families Sought
Two organizations that work with foreign exchange students are seeking local families interested in hosting visiting students.
Pacific Intercultural Exchange (PIE) plans to bring students between the ages of 15 and 18 years. All are English-speaking, have their own spending money, carry accident and health insurance and want to share their cultural experiences. PIE has programs to match almost every family's needs, ranging in length from one semester to a full academic year, where the students attend local public and private high schools. PIE area representatives match students with host families by finding common interests and lifestyles through an in-home meeting. Prospective host families are able to review student applications and select the perfect match. PIE can fit a student into just about any situation, whether it is a single parent, a childless couple, a retired couple or a large family.
Families who host for PIE are eligible to claim a monthly charitable contribution deduction on their itemized tax returns for each month they host a sponsored student.
For the upcoming programs, PIE has students from a number of different countries, including Germany, Russia, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, Hungary, Croatia, Korea, Mexico, Slovakia and China.
Families interested in learning more about student exchange or arranging for a meeting with a community representative may call (866) 546-1402.
Families who would prefer a shorter committment may want to consider programs by The Center for Cultural Interchange (CCI). Their short-term group homestay program for teens from Spain who will be arriving in Delaware County Monday, Aug 4, and will be staying through Monday, Aug. 25. CCI is still looking for several host families.
During their short stay, the exchange students will attend English classes, participate in activities and experience American culture through their host families. Host families are responsible for providing room and board to their students. Families with or without children, single parents and "empty nesters" are welcome.
Potential host families can visit www.cci-exchange.com, call (215) 527-1973 or email pianoarg7@aol.com for further information about hosting.
