Watt wins NHWGA am title

STRATHAM — Derryfield Country Club's Tara Watt may have learned a lesson that helped her win this year's New Hampshire Women's Golf Association amateur championship when she made a 7 on The Golf Club of New England's par-3 17th hole during Wednesday's second round.

Feeling she needed an extra club, Watt pulled out an eight-iron on the 17th tee. She was anything but confident in her selection, however, and took a weak swing that left her short of the green.

Watt went back to a nine-iron when she reached the 17th tee Thursday. Her tee shot ended up within 12 feet of the hole and she made a birdie that gave her a share of the lead.

"Obviously I didn't want to be short like yesterday," Watt said shortly after her one-stroke victory over defending champion Chelsea Demers. "I hit the shorter club, my (nine-iron). I had a little talk with myself after the seven I made last night. Take the club and trust it — that's what I did."

Watt still had plenty of work to do after the birdie. She reached the 18th tee in a four-way tie with Demers, Plaistow's Cortney Tilley and Eastman's Alexandra Schmidt.

Watt prevailed by making a par on the par-4 18th hole. She finished with a three-day total of 236.

"All I wanted to do was finish with a par, and I guess that was enough to hold up," Watt said. "My plan worked."

Demers, a Wilton resident, finished second (237), Tilley was third (238) and Schmidt was fourth (239).

Abenaqui Country Club's Dana Harrity began the day in third place, but shot an 84 and finished sixth with a three-round total of 243.

Harrity, a North Hampton resident, was attempting to win the State Am for the 15th time.

Watt, a 28-year-old Manchester resident, was 4-over-par on the front nine, but was even-par on the final nine holes. He round included three birdies and nothing worse than a bogey.

This is her first State Am victory. She was fourth — her highest finish — in both 2005 and 2009.

"I just told myself today to eliminate the big numbers and you'll be fine," she said.

Like Watt, Demers earned a share of the lead with a birdie on No. 17. She hit her tee shot within eight inches and made the putt.

She sliced her drive on the 18th tee, however, and capped her round with a bogey.

"(The birdie) gave me a little more confidence than I had from the rest of my round," Demers said.

(ADULT AUTHOR ONLY) giveaway!  Big shout out to Moira (ADULT AUTHOR ONLY) … THANKS AGAIN!  What an awesome surprise.  I felt like a kid in a candy store that could only pick one.  Let’s face it, I know I’m awesome, but I can only read one book at a time – geez, give me a break!  So upon looking through all my goodies, I was drawn to Iron Witch immediately.  Yes, I must admit that I am 30-something and still enjoy reading YA books and as a side note - this is a book that I would definitely let my 14-year-old daughter read.  Karen Mahoney’s interesting concept of iron tattoos is beautifully portrayed in the cover art, but she takes it one step further with adorning the inside covers as well.  Again, a concept well thought out and executed … making this book stand out from others with cover art only.  Let’s face it, though, you can always grab my attention on covert art with a half-naked man!
