New Square Flouts Building Safety Codes
With some of the hottest days of summer still ahead, New Square, a village in the Skver Hasidic sect in the State of New York, is a disaster waiting to happen, the local fire officials say. It is feared that they faced each summer for many years. Most buildings in the village violate fire codes and municipal government, they say, posing a serious threat to residents and volunteer firefighters there.
"At least 60% of new structures in place have code violations seriously," said Kim Weppler, who retired in April as head of the fire department in charge of New Square."It's just a matter of time before someone gets killed."
Fire officials say it all started to build the code New Square several years ago, life-threatening problems with the above construction remain unanswered. State officials have taken steps, some local officials and residents say, because they do not want to lose voting bloc in the village.
"New Square has plenty of power to deliver votes in the elections," said Joe Meyers, a legislator in Rockland County, where the village of New Square is located. "Officials who otherwise do their jobs to fall when it comes to New Square."
The village of New Square is one of the poorest communities and most dynamic in the country, according to data from U.S. Census Bureau. Between 2000 and 2010, its population increased to nearly 7000, an increase of 5000. The property is so scarce, the people of New Square say that the village chiefs leaving them buy houses in the village if they are married and both partners have relatives living there. At the same time, the average family income in New Square is only $ 20,000 per year, while the average household size is almost six.
In an effort to use limited resources to meet the growing demand for housing and schools, local developers have sometimes cut corners when it comes to building, say the dissidents and leaders of local fire Fire Moleston District and the Department of Hillcrest fire, which combine to provide volunteer fire department in the village of new site and a handful of municipalities.
Many buildings are too close together, sprinkler systems and lack of hazardous or blocked exits, firefighters said. More importantly, they say, many homes are used as businesses.
"We will go into a building and find a second life in the family attic and a factory run out of the basement," said Chris Kearney, a former head of the Hillcrest Fire Department who is now his agent to public information. "It's incredibly dangerous for us and for them.
