Group sought to tout wildlife refuge

So Murray, the Visitors Services manager for the Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge Complex, is looking for a few good community volunteers to start the “Friends of the Lake Havasu National Wildlife Refuge Complex.” Murray explains that a “Friends” group is a private nonprofit organization that is able to “expand public awareness and participation in wildlife conservation.” But more importantly, Murray says, is that the group is able to do many things that staff cannot. “One thing I’ve seen and helped with in other states is establishing a water festival,” Murray said, adding that one of his goals is to create a Western Arizona Children’s Water Festival. “It’s a project that uses the University of Arizona’s WET curriculum and establishes a day to invite students in the community to look at various water concepts and get them interested and educated about the different projects.” Opinions, advice and all other information expressed in havasunews.com's story comments represent the individual's own views and not necessarily those of Today's News Herald. Pest-control officials in Lake Havasu City say there are steps residents can take throughout the year to prevent the unwanted guests from getting inside. But it's also important to understand the desert is as much their home as it is ours,

City Center Executive Plaza Owner Jerry Aldridge, who reopened The Refuge Golf & Country Club in January, requested the annexation for about 50 acres of the property to support his plan for a new mobile home resort. But dozens protested the proposed changes and the annexation request July 13 during the City Council’s regular meeting. City Manager Charlie Cassens said the next opportunity for public input is scheduled for Aug. 17. “We’re holding a work session at that time that is going to be an addition to the rest of the public hearing process,” Cassens said. “We will also be presenting the cost-benefit analysis (of the proposal) for council’s perusal at that time. We thought it best to do that on a single-item agenda. … (The Refuge Annexation) will be the only thing on the agenda so there will be plenty of opportunities for the public to speak.” Thompson previously said she is thankful there will be another meeting on the annexation, in part, because she’ll be able to provide information on a survey of Refuge residents. Thompson said a survey sent out in March asked residents if they were in favor of, opposed to or neutral on the proposed “motor coach” development. Thompson added that out of 274 individual property owners surveyed (360 lots), 170 were returned. " Just a thought! the mayor said on KNTR raido that the Refuge woud pay a flat rate for sewer use as they are already connected and will pay a flat rate. question if the houses there are on sewer and we don't supply water to them then how much are they paying for sewer and does it compare to the homes in the city of the same size and water use? looks like they can use all the water they want and only pay flat rate for sewer. " " Just found out that the "new" Refuge is private and that as a resident of LHC if you don't own land or an rv there, the only membership you can get is an expensive and limited social membership. The Aldridges say it cant be profitable without the RVs but how serious are they about really wanting to make this thing work? to make it THAT exclusive? And on top of that, your RV has to be new and big? So they will be turning down everyone else?Apparently the rest of us are just riff-raff that they are trying to keep out of thier "private and exclusive club", but they want to use us to provide services? And take away our water on top of all of that? This thing is a diaster on wheels. " " When my husband and I purchased our lot, we couldn't wait to build our retirement home. We worked hard and saved our money to do this. We finally had our dream home in a quiet gated community on a golf course in the City of Laka Havasu that we love so much. We are from Southern California and could not wait to retire there. That dream is over. Now our Arnold Palmer Signature Golf Course is being chopped up so City Center can build an RV park!!! Do you think my husband and I would have spent our hard earned money so the rug could be pulled out from under us? Who does this to people? I am really hoping that the City Counsel does not send the wrong message to all future home owners (and tax payers) that home ownership is not safe in the City of Lake Havasu. Please help us preserve our home and the dream that we worked so hard to achieve!!! " " bobo, these folks have been here for many years and have built and sold successful enterprises. They have provided employment for many people in Lake Havasu City. They purchased The Refuge at a price far below what one would have thought it to be valued at, and had a plan. To proceed with that plan and to make it profitable as a venture, a variety of things need to take place. Things that most people would not be able to make happen. American Water is the company who bills for and provides water service for Desert Hills. They are more expensive than LHC water. That is inconsequential. LHC does maintain a AA grade treated waste water line for irrigation. Water which is sold at a loss and considerably under market. Guess that beats pumping it into the injection wells. Yep, we pump treated waste water into the ground. Whatever. If you are familiar with the wetlands below The Refuge to the west and south, you know that the runoff (leaching, actually) from the heavily fertilized irrigation of the course has changed the habitat in an awful way. Leaving The Refuge in the county is the most responsible thing Lake Havasu City can do. In that manner, more government agencies and entities are responsible for oversight than if the city were to extend its limits to include a select portion of The Refuge in order to accommodate the designs of its new owners. " This is annexation will never make a profit for the city. There is no financial proof of that on paper been given how this will make $11 million per yr. No one would spend $150,000 for a golf membership with monthly dues of $385 a month for years. You own nothing and if the golf course goes broke you lose your membership too. This is not a good thing for the city and will leave the city open for future litigation. This could cost the taxpayers of Lake Havasu a lot of money it it doesn't work, not to mention American Water will lose and Desert Hills Fire Department will lose their revenue too. The county will lose tax dollars if property values go down more. The City Council needs to consider the homeowners & the environment, not just the future promise of tax dollars being made. " These are only a couple of my concerns but something the citizens of Lake Havasu City should take into consideration. Lake Havasu City, as much as we love it, is not Palm Desert. This plan for the upscale RV Park is shaky at best. I don't believe it will generate the millions City Center mentioned and could acutually cost the City in Police and Fire protection not to mention other city service costs.
