Chasing the Dragon – novel magazine

This past February my friend and I travelled to remote Guizhou, a largely unvisited province in southwest China. It lies far from the spiritual home of Chinese civilization, the Yellow River basin; a distance which is both actual and cultural. Traditionally, the south is seen by the Chinese as adreadful, dangerous and disease-ridden territory – a place to be avoided. Throughout imperial history the people of the South have frequently rebelled against Chinese colonisation, expelling them from the region before withdrawing to their hidden mountain homes and clandestine mountain customs.

Perpetually swathed in mist, Guizhou deserves its mysterious reputation. Its rarely-blue sky has been pierced by a thousand limestone peaks which rise Iike natural spires from the endless pine and bamboo forest. Rivers cleave great gulleys, as deep as the mountains are tall, and bore caves into the surrounding rock walls. Black wooden houses, the same colour as the soil they stand on, are squashed in amongst the fields of cabbages and terraces of rice that have claimed almost all of scarcely-flat Guizhou’s flat land.

It was after driving through such scenery for eight hours that we eventually arrived in the town of Kaili, in the east of the province. We had reached this small market town just in time for the start of the Chinese New Year celebrations, and the festive atmosphere was epidemic.  Kaili’s streets smelled like mud and gunpowder and were crammed with hawkers, selling anything from snacks to homeware, from fireworks to live animals. At Kaili’s market you can buy lunch and a duck and still have change from £2. Young women, all clothed in their distinctive tribal dress consisting of multicoloured silk tunics adorned with rows of shiny beads and silver stitching, swarmed to those stalls selling silver jewellery – silver is believed to ward off evil spirits – yammering about the price, the quality, the design.  Huddled around kerb-side TV sets you could find the men, all of whom were applying the same intense concentration to watching replays of traditional bull fights, as their wives did to shopping for jewellery. Animals and children wrestled for space on the unpaved backstreets, while grandmothers, all with elaborate headdresses and drooping earlobes, struggled to keep track of both of them. The chaos was wonderful.

On our second day in Kaili, my friend and I were at a telephone shop, trying to buy phone credit, when a dragon marched passed the window. Its body was made of yellow painted cloth and its head was a papier-mâché marvel. Red spines snaked down the length of its body and it was held aloft by about thirteen scruffy youths who held the bamboo supports. We had never seen such a thing outside of a book so, filled with childlike wonder, we ran out of the shop and called for the dragon to stop. It did.
