QR Codes provide information to smartphones

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - QR Code is an enigma to many folks.

When area people were shown examples, guesses ranged from part of an old video game to a visual puzzle.

In reality, it stands for Quick Response. It looks kind of link barcode. It was first used in Japanese auto part distribution.

Now, it's used to send more information to your phone.

"We think this is going to be the summer of QR codes. It's a very exciting time," Michael Balas, Vitreo QR Founder and CEO, said.

Balas creates QR Codes for customers. He says the little code is a link to a wealth of extra information and multimedia content, and you can get it all in seconds, direct to your smartphone.

QR Codes are a bridge between the print and the online worlds. Realtors are posting them on for sale signs, or in newspaper ads, to provide more information or even a virtual tour of homes for sale.

Stores are also using them. The Home Depot posts QR Codes on patio furniture and outdoor plants. The QR Codes link to videos, reviews, and for flowers, details on how to plant and compatible flowers.

"They can come in, scan items they want to scan, see what's available to them and also see some interaction with that with the multimedia that's available to them on the 2D codes," said the Home Depot's John Smith.

It means not only more information, but an opportunity for consumers to save money.

"They can get promotion, they can get sale items, they can get things that they might not be able to get somewhere else," Balas said.

QR displays are easy to use. All you need is your smartphone. Go into your app store, search for QR Code, download a scanner, and you can start snapping away in minutes.

Websites even allow you to create your own QR Code. You can add it to your business card to easily exchange your contact information. Or add a code to your resume with a link to your website or online portfolio.

"You're gonna see QR Codes on restaurants and buses and magazines and newspapers, on television. They're here to stay and you are gonna see them everywhere," Balas said.

Megan Hunyor says, "I've always been curious about it, so if it gets me the info I need faster, I'll probably start using it as soon as I learn how."
