If I got upset every time a photo I liked ran small, my tears would have long run dry in my short time here. It's out of my control for the most part and the limitless space to publish work online helps ease the disappointment a little.
Covering sports is when this consolation most often comes into play. Often, my favorite sports photos are either away from the action or don't fit the typical sports section mold. When we have the opportunity to actually shoot a whole game, there are often many options to choose from for print. How the story is featured greatly affects this decision, as it did last Saturday when I covered both the Chiawana girls' thrilling double overtime win over Gonzaga Prep and the Tri-Cities Fever's landslide 76-28 victory in their home opener against the Arizona Adrenaline .
The Fever also won on the sports front, earning the main spot, and we ran this shot of Mike McClendon returning a field-goal attempt as teammate Joseph Thornton lays a block on the Adrenaline's Sergio Velesco

As I often write, this job exposes you to a lot of things you might otherwise never think about . And after three years on the job, it's weird to think about how much time I've spent at high school athletics especially considering that this includes several sports I don't care about. Spring is the both the culmination of the school year and this concept, with my sports shooting dominated by uninteresting targets.
Sure, I love shooting track , but it's not something I seek out in non-Olympic times, and aside from a brief stint as goalie for an intramural soccer team, the same goes for non-World Cup years. I'm largely unfamiliar with the parts of golf that don't include swearing or looking for your ball, and I feel baseball and softball are best reserved for Sportscenter highlights or as background to gluttonous beer and nacho consumption .
Golf is probably the toughest of these spring sports to photograph. It's a slow game with a ton of ground to cover filled with boring repetitive action and strict

After a refreshing change of pace last Fourth of July , I was back on a familiar saddle this year, rehashing Pasco's Grand Old 4th Parade before snapping some pretty firework photos. But what usually is a busy weekend looked to be surprisingly light in my fifth year of holiday coverage.
Pictures Of Sad Faces - News

I've had people complain to me about the "horrible" photo I took of them just because it wasn't a posed snapshot in which the subject had a chance to deploy the photo face she developed over the years. We're often accused of focusing on the negative,

Then scientists played sad music and showed sad pictures of sad faces. Lo and behold, the participants full of fat were more upbeat, and MRI scans showed the fatty solution seemed to dampen activity in parts of the brain that are involved in sadness.

After the feeding, the researchers played sad classical music and showed volunteers pictures of sad faces, all in an attempt to induce feelings of sadness. Mood surveys conducted throughout the experiment showed that the participants found the sad
Sad faces make better fundraising - Future Fundraising Now
... People are more sympathetic and give more to a charity when the victim portrayed on the advertisement expressed sadness than when a victim expressed happiness or neutral emotion.... the authors illustrate when and how a sad expression enhances sympathy and giving. Taken together, the findings imply the importance of subtle emotional cues that sway sympathy and giving.
We should approach studies like these with a heavy dose of skepticism; they aren't fundraising situations with real donors, but artificial situations with college students.
Also, there is a lot more information in a photo than a sad/neutral/happy expression. There are sad faces that make people feel defensive. There are happy faces that somehow go straight to the heart. Sometimes there are things in the background of the photo that undermine what you see in the faces.
I'm showing you this because it backs up what every experienced fundraiser already knows: Sad faces get more response.
But that's just a starting point. You have to look at every photo carefully before you use it.
Thanks to Advice for Good for the tip.
Thank you for your interesting post. However, as you've already indicated, we need to be careful how much weight we give the study. In addition to the reasons for caution that you already cited, we need to be careful because the study does not indicate the impact on donor retention of using sad faces. For example, continual use of sad images might lead to donor burnout and attrition. It also does not address the issue of when an image becomes exploitative of the subject or manipulative of the recipient. I reported in my book ("Donor-Centered Planned Gift Marketing") that Save the Children used happy images of the children of Haiti who were beneficiaries of the nonprofit's services. The idea was to give the donor-public hope and to show them a way to make a positive impact. While I don't know what image testing Save the Children has done, I suspect the decision on what images to use was made very carefully. From the cheap seats where I sit, Save the Children doesn't seem to be suffering from its decision. Intuitively, I believe that we must present prospective donors with a problem. But, we must also show them a clear solution that they can participate in. In some cases, the use of sad images might accomplish that but, as Save the Children found, happy images can also be quite effective.
