SHELBY — Over the last four years, Jacob Richards, 17, has watched his mom, Crystal McDaniel, serve and offer a listening ear to people who are homeless, hungry and in need of basic necessities.
After talking to a woman who had spent time in jail for shoplifting a toothbrush for her child, McDaniel started collecting toiletry items that are given once a quarter to the people who come to the soup lunch on Fridays at First Baptist Church. The “Friday, Feed the Hungry” program is sponsored by the Greater Cleveland County Baptist Association.
Because of generous donations from churches and the community, an organized space was needed to store the items. Richards, an Eagle Scout candidate and member of Boy Scout Troop 101, chose to tackle the problem for his Eagle Scout project.
“Before I started, the toiletry items were unorganized and thrown in here,” Richards said, pointing out the dividers he made for the large pull-out bin located under the stage area in the gym.
“I’m building a closet to hold the extra items and organized this bin to hold the toiletry bags,” he said.
Each bag includes a full-size soap bar, shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrush. The bins also hold plastic storage boxes which include items that are used every week at the soup lunch and single items given when there is an urgent need.
