Saint Cuthbert strikes again

. “The small volume was buried with one of England’s most popular saints, Saint Cuthbert , at a time when the country was being swept by continental invasions following the departure of the Romans, and despite its age is still in perfect condition with its original leather cover.”

St. Cuthbert, the “wonder worker of Britain” as he is known to his devotees, died in 687 A.D.. “He was widely regarded as Britain’s most popular saint up until the murder of Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170,” according to Reuters .

His help may be needed by the British Library as they try to fund raise to buy the volume he was buried with, a Latin Gospel of Saint John written in the 7th Century. The Library is shy just 2.75 million pounds (or $4.4 million) of the 9 million pounds they need to close the sale. A condition of the sale is that the Cuthbert Gospel spends half the year at Durham Cathedral , where the saint is now buried. The book was loaned to the library in 1979 and has been there ever since.

Cuthbert himself was moved around quite a bit. “When Viking raiders invaded Lindisfarne in 875, a group of monks fled, taking Cuthbert’s body with them. After seven years of traveling with the body, the monks finally buried the saint again at what became Durham Cathedral,” according to Reuters . “The book was found with him when his coffin was reopened in 1104.”

After the book was taken from the coffin it was placed in a shrine at Durham Cathedral. But, with Henry VIII ‘s Dissolution of the Monasteries, the gospel was held in various private collections.

The book has been in the possession of the Jesuit British Province of the Society of Jesus since 1769, and was kept for many years at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire .

Just deserts for 'Citizen Murdoch'

As for Murdoch, he set the tone for his newspapers just as surely as Henry II was responsible for Thomas Becket's murder — “Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?” The political class has turned against him, celebrities, too (Hugh Grant, etc.

Bluebells and Lesnes Abbey « Texas on Thames

After my post about bluebonnets and daffodils, I was pointed to this Guardian article on bluebells in Southwest Britain. Seems like the UK has it’s own spring time sea of blue. In the past few weeks I have started to notice blue flowers in small and large patches of green around town. For an excursion, a friend recommend I check out Abbey Wood.

A walk through the ancient south east London woods did not disappoint.

As we wandered through the woods, we eventually came up on Lesnes Abbey. The abbey, now in ruins, was founded by Richard de Luci in 1178 as penance for his involvement in the murder of Thomas Becket. In 1524, Lesnes was closed by Henry VIII along with scores of other monasteries in England and Wales. The ruins make an interesting backdrop for picnics and the like. The proximity of the woods and abbey to London makes it an easy place to visit.

After our outing, we stopped by the Old Mill, a converted 18th century mill with a large beer garden. The locals were on good form and so was the owner, so we ended our day in Southwest London with a few real ales. I am embarrassed to admit that  real ale tastes like flat warm beer to me. Perhaps I need to spend more time at the pub to develop a true appreciation.
