In WTA history (No. 4), Azarenka has made more money this year ($2,389,184 U.S.) than Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova and No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki. She’s known for her temper tantrums on court and her long, high-pitched warbling scream when she hits the ball. At Wimbledon this year, playing with her black-painted fingernails, her scream was recorded at 95 decibels, prompting officials to say sternly: “Officials would prefer to see less grunting.”

Petra Kvitova

The youthful Wimbledon champ – the first player born during the 1990s to win a Grand Slam event – has all the tools to become one of tennis’s stars during the coming years. The 21-year-old Czech, a left-hander like her idol Martina Navratilova, has a powerful serve (she delivered 36 aces at Wimbledon, third-most of any woman), great timing, and a very heavy forehand and backhand. Perhaps the only thing she lacks is speed, but she makes up for it with her cool, unflappable demeanour and her habit of playing close to the baseline.

Sabine Lisicki

The young German was one of the revelations of Wimbledon this year. Ranked No. 62 going in (as a wild card), the 21-year-old became the first German in 12 years to reach a semi-final of a Grand Slam, defeating No. 3 seed Li Na and No. 9 Marion Bartoli along the way. As recently as April, Lisicki had been ranked outside the top 200. Her Wimbledon heroics now place her No. 26 on the WTA list. Unfortunately for Lisicki, the cutoff date for the main draw of the Rogers Cup came just the day Wimbledon started, so Lisicki will have to play qualifying rounds first. The main draw includes players up to No. 41.

Rebecca Marino

The 20-year-old from Vancouver has rocketed up the WTA standings over the past year and now sits at No. 41. This year, she made it to the second round at the Australian Open and the third round of the French Open. She went toe-to-toe with Venus Williams during the second round of the U.S. Open last year, but lost 7-6, 6-3 after a thrilling first set. Last September, she defeated Bartoli in an event in Quebec City, her first career win against a top-20 player.

Li Na

The popular French Open champion has become one of the biggest sports stars in her home country of China, in the same league as newly retired NBA player Yao Ming. Li’s win over Francesca Schiavone of Italy at Roland Garros was seen by 116 million people on television in China, the most-watched sporting event this year in the country. The WTA is rubbing its hands with glee at the prospect of expanding further into China’s populous market.
