Emergency personnel, citizens can mingle Tuesday night
Linton Chief of Police Troy Jerrell hopes to see everyone from Greene County at National Night Out on Tuesday from 5-9 p.m. at Humphreys Park."I want to remind everyone this is a free event," Jerrell said.
The importance of National Night Out is to get the community acquainted with its law enforcement officials.
"National Night Out lets us (police and fire department) mingle with the people, talk to one another, hang out and see who we are," Jerrell explained.
There will be several vendors present, as well as free games and entertainment. The evening will begin with a Hula Hoop contest at the bandstand, and the Martial Arts and Dojo in Linton will be giving a demonstration.
There will be a disc jockey on the stage, followed by Kade Puckett playing for an hour. Puckett is well known in the area for his guitar stylings.
U.S. 231 will take the stage until the end of the event. The band performs original and cover folk rock and blues songs. They play songs by Tom Petty, "Amie" by Pure Prairie League and songs by The Band.
Wright Volunteer Fire Department will be bringing its smokehouse. It is a fire simulating trailer that teaches how to handle fire-related situations and how to prevent them.
Children will be thrilled to use the four giant, inflatable bounce houses, one of which is two stories with a slide. Parents will be even more thrilled when they realize they are free.
There will be free hotdogs and beverages, and Jerrell described the event as a "cook out" environment. The local Red Cross and Node 1 donated bottles of water. Pepsi and Linton Civitan donated soda.
Local fire departments will be at National Night Out, along with Sparky the fired dog and McGruff the crime dog.
"If the heat gets too bad, the Linton Fire Department will have misting fans to cool people," Jerrell said.
There will be plenty of free games and more than 40 vendors set up in the park, which will consist of organizations and companies throughout the county. There will be prizes given out throughout the evening, including car seats, bikes, tickets to school ballgames and several toys.
Hair Scripts, located on Main Street in Linton, will be set up doing free haircuts and demonstrating manicures and pedicures, Jerrell said.
The Linton Police Department will be handing out information for a potential Town Watch Program at its booth. Homeowners who live within city limits can fill out an application to be a part of the program.
"I just want to say thanks to all the organizations who have come together and assisted and made this possible," Jerrell said. "I hope to have a fun time and hope to see everyone out there.
