Notes: This Chimney Sweep pattern contains, usually, two crossed white rectangles in each block center, typically an area for signatures or inscriptions. There are no dates or inscriptions on this quilt. The quilt top contains at least 20 different fabric scrap types. Some of the smallest blocks in this pattern contain up to three pieced fabrics scraps to create the patch. Census records indicate that Rachel Haynes’s grandmother was a seamstress and may have lived close to her granddaughter, possibly teaching her to sew.
